How my community came together to support RCEW

Reanna raised an incredible £1001.93 through her fundraising efforts, with a lot of help from her amazing local community!

I’ve always been passionate about the work that Rape Crisis England and Wales does. I know a lot of women who have experienced forms of sexual harassment, and so many of them have been supported by RCEW.

I’m also writing my dissertation on sexual violence, and I plan to go and work in the same field when I graduate, which I feel is really overlooked. So before I went back to uni, I knew I wanted to do something to show my support for RCEW and decided to hold a jumble sale in my village of Welton, Lincolnshire.

I gave myself months to plan and organise it, and I’m glad I did because I wasn’t really expecting the amount of donations I got! The community spirit was through the roof, and on a massive scale. People donated so much to us – everyone went above and beyond to help out.

I work in a cafe, and my boss was kind enough to let me accept the donations that the village was bringing in there, which was good because we got loads! We were donated books, games, a lot of toys, kids’ clothes, school clothes, homeware and someone even asked if I wanted a tumble dryer.

It was a fantastic day, and very busy! I wasn’t expecting it to be such a big event, but there was a huge turnout from the community. My family came along on the day to help me out, and my boss even closed the cafe so the girls from work could come and help out too.

"Rape Crisis England and Wales was the clear choice for me when it came to choosing a charity to fundraise for because it’s too often overlooked when it comes to fundraising, despite the vital support it provides to so many people in need.

I did this for all the women I know who have experienced sexual harassment, which, heartbreakingly, is most of them, and to stand in solidarity with survivors everywhere. This isn’t just a fundraiser for me, it reflects my commitment to supporting survivors, and my goal of one day working for Rape Crisis to make a lasting difference." We raised an amazing £450 in cash on the day and then the same on the fundraising page. To have raised that much in around an hour and a half felt incredible.

It really was amazing to see my village come together in support of such a good cause, everyone wanted to help out – even the Methodist church where I held the event raised money for us by holding a charity coffee morning in support of RCEW.

If you’re thinking of fundraising, my advice is to make sure you plan, and don’t be afraid – I wasn’t sure how many donations I was really going to get, but suddenly my garage was full of things people had given in support.
