Rape Crisis calls for overhaul of Criminal Injuries Compensation scheme

31 Jul 2017

On 18th July 2017, Rape Crisis England & Wales joined with charity coalition partners, including Barnardo's, Victim Support and Liberty, to call on the Government for an urgent review of the Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme (CICS).

The campaign was launched following a Freedom of Information request that revealed nearly 700 child victims of sexual abuse have been denied payments since November 2012, some on the grounds that they 'consented', despite being under the legal age of consent.

Rape Crisis is deeply concerned that both child and adult victims and survivors of sexual violence, including child sexual abuse and exploitation, have been disadvantaged and even re-traumatised by their experience of the Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme (CICS) and will continue to monitor the situation, including the urgent review now promised by CICA, and to campaign for much-needed and long-overdue changes.
