Woman jailed for false retraction denied right to appeal

12 Nov 2010

An application for bail and leave to appeal her conviction was heard today by Judge John Rogers QC, in chambers, but permission to appeal was turned down.

The judge considered the grounds to appeal but decided his decision had been correct and therefore the issue of bail would not be considered. The case is now expected to go to the Court of Appeal in London.

The woman, who was not present, was cleared of making a false allegation of rape last Friday.

Rape Crisis (England and Wales) and other VAW groups such as End Violence Against Women and Campaign to End Rape have voiced our outrage.

We have received many emails and Facebook messages of support for this woman, who is jailed in Styles Prison. Should anyone wishing to send letters of support, please direct them to the solicitors acting on her behalf who will ensure she receives them: Geraint Jones & Co, Bronwydd House, The Bank, Newtown, Powys, SY16 2AU.
